2-Day Short and Sweet Tanzania Safari

Tour Overview

This 2-day safari offers an unforgettable journey through two of Tanzania’s most iconic wildlife havens: Ngorongoro Crater and Tarangire National Park. Begin your adventure exploring the breathtaking landscapes and incredible wildlife in Ngorongoro, one of Africa’s most unique ecosystems. This massive volcanic caldera is home to a thriving diversity of wildlife, with excellent chances of spotting the Big Five, including the rare black rhino.

Tour Itinerary

Your journey begins with an early start from Arusha, heading west to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, a drive that takes about 3–4 hours. On the way, you’ll enjoy scenic views of the Tanzanian countryside, dotted with villages and farmlands.

  • Descend into Ngorongoro Crater
After arriving at the crater’s rim, prepare for an exciting descent into the 600-meter-deep Ngorongoro Crater, the largest intact volcanic caldera in the world. The crater floor covers approximately 260 square kilometers and hosts one of the densest concentrations of wildlife in Africa.
  • Crater Safari
Spend the day exploring the diverse habitats within the crater, including savannahs, swamps, forests, and lakes. The crater is home to around 30,000 animals, with excellent chances of spotting the Big Five: lions, leopards, elephants, buffaloes, and the critically endangered black rhino. Your guide will take you to prime viewing spots for elephants grazing in acacia woodlands, zebras and wildebeests roaming the grasslands, and lions lounging in the sun.
  • Picnic Lunch by the Hippo Pool
Around midday, enjoy a picnic lunch at one of the designated sites within the crater, often near the hippo pool. The area provides a safe and scenic spot to rest and observe hippos as they wallow in the water.
  • Afternoon Safari & Drive to Karatu
After lunch, continue your safari through the crater floor, taking in the breathtaking landscapes and abundant wildlife. In the late afternoon, ascend the crater and head to the nearby town of Karatu, where you’ll check in at your lodge to relax and enjoy dinner.

Start your day with breakfast at your lodge in Karatu before departing for Tarangire National Park, a 1.5-hour drive. This park is known for its stunning landscape, dotted with iconic baobab trees and home to one of Tanzania’s largest elephant populations.

  • Safari in Tarangire National Park
Upon arrival, begin your game drive through Tarangire’s vast savannahs. The Tarangire River, the park’s lifeline, attracts a wide variety of animals, especially during the dry season when it serves as a critical water source. Here, you’ll have the chance to see herds of elephants, zebras, wildebeests, giraffes, and antelope species. Predators like lions and leopards are also frequently spotted, often in the shade of acacia trees.
  • Bird Watching and Scenic Views
Tarangire is also a birdwatcher’s paradise, with over 500 species of birds recorded. Look out for unique species such as the Kori bustard, the heaviest flying bird, and colorful flocks of lovebirds, starlings, and weavers.
  • Lunch in the Park
Enjoy a packed lunch at a designated picnic site within the park, with views of the Tarangire River. This setting allows you to observe the animals as they come to the river to drink, offering prime photo opportunities and close encounters with wildlife.
  • Afternoon Game Drive and Return to Arusha
After lunch, continue exploring the park for a few more hours. In the late afternoon, begin the drive back to Arusha, arriving in the early evening.
